In India to follow family footsteps of career / profession by the next generation has been an integral part of our society.

In India to follow family footsteps of career / profession by the next generation has been an integral part of our society.

In fact , if the next generation of a professionally successful individual pursues a different career , it becomes a topic for discussions.
Compared with professions like law or entertainment industry, medicine has generally remained a field where entry and progress are driven more by merit than lineage.
However , the results of recent survey of doctors’ views on the careers their kids should pursue seem to state completely different and the ramifications of which could be concerning!!
9 out 10 doctors do not want their Kids to pursue medical field / line which even today commands great respect from society at large ..
Why these doctors who are successful in their own careers do not want their children to follow their footsteps ??
Are these extreme thoughts are emanating from their own experiences such as

  • burn out
  • workplace violence
  • long gestation period for settling in career ( average 8-10 years )
  • medico legal anxiety
  • poor pay structure in the initial stages
  • poor work life balance
Add to this pressure of Noble profession…and pressure of being responsible 24by7.
My point is that if the medical field do not get fresh top talent which is passionate about it but some second rung talent , then it will be “ red flag “ not only for medical world but also for society at large !
Let’s not forget that the human touch of doctor can never be replaced by AI .
Doctors not only look at symptoms but also get under the skin to understand the root cause, the insight which comes after years of studying and experience.
I think we as medical professionals owe to our field and must find ways to arrest / reverse the trends ..
    Any thoughts ?
